Issue Notice:
- Apis dorsata, the giant honeybee, is a wild bee native to Cambodia, renowned for its high-quality honey, particularly from the Mondulkiri region.
- These aggressive bees build large, single combs in tall trees. They are traditionally harvested through honey hunting or more sustainable methods such as rafter beekeeping.
- Lifestyle: These bees build free-hanging combs, often at great heights in trees, and are not domesticable.
- Honey Harvesting: In northeastern Cambodia (Mondulkiri), the honey is traditionally harvested by the indigenous Pnong community.
- Sustainability: Projects (such as those supported by UNESCO) promote rafter beekeeping, where bees build their nests on sloping beams, allowing for sustainable harvesting without destroying the colony.
- Conservation Status: Despite their importance for pollination, populations are threatened by habitat loss, destructive harvesting methods, and the consumption of bee brood.
- Mondulkiri wild honey is now a protected geographical indication in order to preserve the tradition and protect the bees.
