Issue Notice:
- Due to their striking appearance, peacocks, especially the males, are considered the oldest ornamental birds. They were already mentioned in the legends of ancient Greece. Peacocks were also kept at the court of King Solomon. Originally native to India and Sri Lanka, these birds are now kept as pets worldwide, remaining in their natural habitats.
- The male peacock has a bright blue neck, breast, and belly. Depending on the light, the plumage can shimmer with greenish and golden hues. A narrow band extending from the nostrils to the eye, as well as a broad, semi-oval area below the eye, are white and bare. The head is relatively small compared to the body.
- The male's train consists of greatly elongated upper tail coverts, measuring one to one and a half meters in length. These can be fanned out into a fan-like display. The vividly colored markings of large, iridescent blue "eyes" serve to deter predators, which are meant to mistake them for the eyes of large mammals. If this isn't enough to scare off an attacker, the rooster sets his fanned tail feathers into a loud rattling motion. The actual tail is much shorter, at about 40 to 45 cm. It is brown and consists of multi-tiered tail feathers.
