THE 4 ATTS SURCHARGES ONLY IN SIAMESE ISSUED OCTOBER, 1892
 
1887 issue 24 atts purple and blue surcharged in black "value 4 atts" (in Siamese only) by means of handstamps. Two types of surcharge, one using wooden handstamps by the Akson Printing Office, Bangkok and another using metal handstamps done by the Post and Telegraph Department, Bangkok, are known.
         
DESCRIPTION OF THE TYPE 1 AND TYPE 2
 
Type 1:  Wooden handstamp, first two letters joined
Type 2:  Metal handstamp, first two letters separated

THE TOTAL NUMBER SURCHARGED IS AS FOLLOWS:

Type 1:  80,000 pieces
Type 2:  120,000 pieces

THE TOTAL NUMBER ISSUED IS AS FOLLOWS:
Type 1:  8,000 pieces
Type 2:  4,000 pieces
The remaining surcharged stamps were additionally surcharged in English before issuance.

DESCRIPTON OF TYPE 1 HANDSTAMP VARIETIES

(I-I) Handstamp A - The Siamese numeral is on a level with the other characters. Bottom character has a vertical upstroke
(I-II) Handstamp B - The Siamese numeral is on a level with the other characters. Upstroke of bottom character inclines to the right
(I-III) Handstamp C - The Siamese numeral is above the level of the other characters. Bottom character has a vertical upstroke
(I-IV) Handstamp D - The Siamese numeral is above the level of the other characters. Upstroke of bottom character inclines to the right

Some early authors listed additional handstamp varieties but it is now known that these are merely impressions from one of the above handstamps distorted by ink clogged in the wooden handstamp.
              
DESCRIPTION OF TYPE 2 HANDSTAMP VARIETIES

(II-I) Handstamp A - The first Siamese character is slightly raised. There is just over 1.0 mm space between fourth and fifth characters
(II-II) Handstamp B - All characters are on a level. The space between fourth and fifth characters is barely 5 mm.
(II-III) Handstamp C - The fourth character is much heavier than normal
An additional Handstamp variety similar to handstamp A, except space between fourth and fifth characters is just under 1.0 mm is known only with additional English surcharge.
