Issue Notice:
- The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) was established on July 14, 1967, by the Stockholm Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization with the aim of promoting rights to intangible property worldwide.
- In 1974, WIPO became a specialized agency of the United Nations. WIPO administers international treaties in the field of intellectual property and is headquartered in Geneva.
- The founding agreement for the International Bureau was the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property of 1883. This international agreement governs essential aspects of the international protection of intellectual property, encompassing the areas of protection for inventions (patents), trademarks, and designs, and remains the basis for the actions of the World Intellectual Property Organization today.
- The organization has 193 member states (as of May 2024), of which 153 have signed the Patent Cooperation Treaty. In 2020, China topped the global ranking of most registrations per country for the first time. Previously, the USA had held the top spot continuously since 1978.
