SIAM (CLASSIC)
, a country or era with a fascinating history......
Until 1939, Siam (Siem, Sejem, Sayam, pronunciation: [prat?ê?t sàja?m], local name [m?a? t?aj]) was the name given to the country in Southeast Asia that largely corresponds to present-day Thailand. At the time of its greatest expansion in the 19th century, it roughly corresponded to the present-day territory of Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos, as well as parts of Malaysia and Myanmar.
Like other Southeast Asian empires, Siam was not a nation-state with clearly defined borders until well into the 19th century. Rather, "Siam" was used abroad to refer to territories dependent on a specific center of power: Sukhothai from 1238 to 1351, Ayutthaya until 1767, Thonburi until 1782, and then Rattanakosin or Bangkok. However, the degree of dependence was gradual, decreasing from the center to the periphery. While the king ruled areas near the respective capital directly or through governors appointed by him, communities with considerable autonomy and their own rulers, who were obliged to pay tribute to Siam, existed on the periphery.
However, these could also be dependent on several empires simultaneously, thus belonging to overlapping spheres of influence (the Mandala model). The self-designation was never "Siam," but rather the name of the capital. The concept of Siam as a geographically defined state territory (Geo-body) only developed during the colonization of the areas surrounding Siam by France and Great Britain. Siam itself was never a colony.
