Issue Notice:
- The Khmer scarf, called a krama in Cambodia, is the traditional, usually red-and-white or blue-and-white checkered cotton scarf.
- Deeply rooted in the culture, it has served for centuries as a versatile everyday tool, from sun protection and baby carrier to a makeshift bicycle repair aid.
- The krama originated in the ancient Khmer civilization. Its weaving tradition dates back centuries. Legend has it that the scarf was inspired by Hindu mythology and the serpent god Naga, which is why it is still seen by many as a symbol of protection and benevolence.
- Today, the krama is considered the quintessential national symbol of Cambodia, used to distinguish its people from their neighbors. After the horrors of the past, the scarf is now worn primarily by the younger generation as a legacy and a symbol of reconstruction and identity. It is now produced in many new, modern designs and colors.
