Issue Notice:
  • The 70th anniversary of the Sixth Buddhist Council was commemorated in 2026. This historic council took place from May 1954 to May 1956 in the specially constructed Maha Passana Guha (Great Cave) in Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar).
  • The meeting concluded on May 24, 1956, exactly 2,500 years after the traditional date of Buddha's Parinibbana (entry into perfect Nirvana).
  • Occasion: The council was convened by the Burmese government under Prime Minister U Nu to preserve and strengthen the purity of Buddhist teachings (the Pali Canon). It was the first such meeting since 1871 in Mandalay.
  • Participants: Approximately 2,500 monks from eight different countries (including Ceylon/Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and India) participated in the recitations.
  • The work: Over two years, the holy scriptures (the Tipitaka) were recited, compared, and checked for errors or deviations.
