• RAMA VIII (1935-1946)

    King Rama VIII Ananda Mahidol (March 2, 1935 ? June 9, 1946)

Born in Heidelberg (Germany), Rama VII's son was just 9 years old when he received the royal dignity. Initially, a regency council takes over the business. In 1939, Siam was officially renamed Thailand (Phratet Thai, translated as "Land of the Free"). On December 1st, 1940, the Franco-Thai War began. Background: After France's defeat against Germany, Thailand wanted to recapture territories in the French colonies of Laos and Cambodia, which it had had to hand over to the French colonial power in 1904 and 1907. After the Thai government under the authoritarian leadership of Field Marshal Plaek Pibulsongkram "Phibun" had secured support for a corresponding territorial expansion from the USA, Great Britain, Germany and Japan in the late summer of 1940, the fighting began in October 1940 with border incidents initiated by the Thai armed forces.

Although Thailand was de facto an ally of the Axis powers Japan and Germany during the Second World War, the "Free Thai Movement", which initially operated underground, managed to overthrow the pro-Japanese military ruler Phibun Songkhram a year before the end of the war and bring about a change of front in Thailand. Relations with the German Reich were broken off in 1944. However, after the end of the war, Thailand had to deliver 1.5 million tons of rice to Great Britain as reparations. On June 9, 1946, the young Ananda Mahidol died as King Rama VIII under violent, mysterious circumstances that were never clarified beyond doubt. His young brother is suddenly confronted with the task of taking over the throne.
